Does Anyone Actually Look at Our LinkedIn Profiles?
We spend hours—sometimes days—refining our LinkedIn profiles.
We carefully craft our headlines, update our certifications, and tell the story of our careers with clarity and heart. We embed keywords for algorithms, write compelling About sections, post thought leadership, and make sure everything reflects our personal brand.
But lately, I’ve been asking myself a difficult question:
Do prospective employers actually look at any of this?
I’m not talking about surface-level glances. I mean really reading it—absorbing the expertise, passion, and purpose we put into these profiles.
My Experience
In recent months, I’ve applied for several roles. In some cases, I was interviewed by hiring managers or executives I’m connected with right here on LinkedIn.
But throughout those interviews, I was asked questions that my profile answers directly—sometimes word-for-word. Key accomplishments, certifications, recent client work… it’s all there.
And I know LinkedIn shows us who’s viewed our profiles. Crickets.
Even the hiring teams who’ve had my application, resume, and profile link in hand don’t appear to have looked.
Which leads to this honest reflection: Are we building LinkedIn profiles for ourselves, each other, or employers who aren’t even looking?
Why This Matters
This isn’t about ego. It’s about respect—and missed opportunities.
If you’re hiring, and someone’s taken the time to apply, at least glance at the profile they’ve poured time and care into. It might:
Confirm cultural fit.
Clarify their passion and purpose.
Reveal endorsements, connections, or projects not shown on a resume.
If you don’t, you may be overlooking great people who’ve already shown initiative by telling their story upfront.
To Job Seekers:
You’re not crazy for putting effort into your profile. The right employer will notice. And your LinkedIn presence can still open doors even when ATS algorithms can’t.
To Hiring Teams:
LinkedIn profiles are more than a résumé supplement. They’re living portfolios of who someone is as a professional. If you want better hires, start by actually looking at what candidates are already sharing with you.
Have you had a similar experience—building a strong LinkedIn presence, only to feel like no one hiring is paying attention?
